Aquaporin-4 IgG autoimmune syndrome and immunoreactivity associated with thyroid cancer

چکیده
Tumor cells can express so-called onconeural antigens, which are normally restricted to mature neurons and glial cells in the CNS. The detection of neuralreactive immunoglobulin G (IgG) aids the diagnosis of paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes (PNS); however, the diagnostic utility and potential pathogenicity of autoantibodies vary between neurologic diseases. By contrast, anti-aquaporin-4 (AQP4) IgG from patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a specific biomarker for NMOSD. AQP4 is the most abundant water channel in the CNS, particularly abundant on astrocytes, forming the glia limitans of the blood–brain barrier. There is compelling evidence that AQP4-IgG reactivity and pathogenicity is restricted to the CNS, probably through an impaired blood–brain barrier. The clinical features of NMOSD include inflammation of the optic nerve, spinal cord, and specific brain areas coinciding with sites of high AQP4 expression. Some cases of NMOSD thus far reported may reflect a paraneoplastic immune response.

Aquaporin-4–positive myelitis associated with Sjögren syndrome and colonic adenocarcinoma
Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory disorder of the CNS with prominent involvement of the optic nerve and the spinal cord. An autoantibody against aquaporin-4 (AQP4), a water channel abundant on astrocytic foot processes, is the biomarker of the disease. The term neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) includes AQP4-IgG-positive syndromes that may only partially fulfill contem...
متن کاملInfection by Cag A Positive Strains of Helicobacter pylori is Associated with Autoimmune Thyroid Disease in Iranian Patients
Background: Infectious agents have been suspected as a triggering factor for development of autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD). Some reports from Western countries have suggested association between Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and ATD. Objective: To investigate the association of ATD with Cag A seropositivity in a population with high rate and early age of onset of HP infection. Methods: I...
متن کاملImmunohistochemical Evaluation of β-catenin Marker in Papillary Thyroid Cancer Clinicopathologic Behavior
Background & objective: papillary thyroid cancer is the most common cancer of thyroid accounting for 75%-85% of all thyroid malignancies. Recently, β-catenin has been determined to play a role in clinical course of human epithelial cancers. This study was designed to reveal the association of β-catenin marker and papillary thyroid carcinoma behavior.<b...
متن کاملAnticardiolipin Antibodies in Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Background: Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) can either occur as a primary syndrome or associated with other autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Anticardiolipin antibody (aCL) of IgG and/or IgM isotype in blood, measured by a standardized ELISA is the most acceptable laboratory criteria. APS IgG isotype, particularly IgG2 subclass is more strongly associated ...
متن کاملPassively transferred human NMO-IgG exacerbates demyelination in mouse experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis
BACKGROUND Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a devastating inflammatory disorder of the optic nerves and spinal cord characterized by frequently recurring exacerbations of humoral inflammation. NMO is associated with the highly specific NMO-IgG biomarker, an antibody that binds the aquaporin-4 water channel. Aquaporin-4 is present on glial endfeet in the central nervous system (CNS). In humans, the...
